Store Clerk Shot, Killed During Overnight Robbery

ATLANTA -- A convenience store clerk was shot and killed during a morning robbery in southeast Atlanta, police said. Police surrounded the Glenwood Food Mart on Glenwood Avenue talking to at least two witnesses, Channel 2’s Darryn Moore reported. A robber walked into the store just after 3 a.m. and pulled a gun, police said. The robber then shot the clerk in the stomach, took the drawer from the cash register and ran, according to authorities. Police Warn Of AC Thieves In Disguise

ATLANTA -- Atlanta police say a group of thieves in disguise are hitting homes, and have even struck a church twice. So far, police told Channel 2 Action News reporter Erica Byfield that they know of at least 10 break-ins. While investigators aren’t linking all of the cases, they said there are some similarities. COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Police say a Pickens County woman accused of asking someone to kill her husband is under arrest and will be brought to Columbus to face charges. Columbus police Lt. Ronald Hastings said Monday that 40-year-old Johnnie Melissa Burmeister faces a felony charge of criminal solicitation to commit murder. Hastings says the woman is accused of asking someone to kill her husband, 45-year-old Michael D. Burmeister of Phenix City, Ala. Hastings said an informant contacted police in the case. Ga. Deputy Accused Of Stealing Inmate’s ID

ALBANY, Ga. -- Authorities have accused a south Georgia sheriff's deputy of stealing the identity of an inmate. Deputy Charles Tharpe was arrested Tuesday and charged with computer theft. Investigators said Tharpe, an 11-year veteran, used jail computers to steal an inmate's social security number and personal information, then used the information to open accounts for cash. Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul said there could be more people involved in the crime and there may be more victims. DALTON, Ga. -- The snow blanketing much of north Georgia helped police catch a pair of burglary suspects. Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier tells WSB radio that officers responded to a burglar alarm going off at a liquor store around 4 a.m. Monday. The glass in the front door had been smashed in.
