1,000 march in support of Ga. death row inmate

Organizers said more than 1,000 people marched to support a Georgia death row inmate set to be executed for the killing of an off-duty Savannah police officer.Amnesty International and the NAACP organized a march and rally Friday for inmate Troy Davis. The marchers started in downtown Atlanta and ended up at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Davis is set to be put to death Wednesday for the 1989 killing of Officer Mark MacPhail.

His supporters said Georgia is set to put an innocent man to death, citing eyewitnesses who claim another man killed MacPhail. Prosecutors said there’s no doubt they charged the right person with the crime, and courts have repeatedly upheld his conviction.

Channel 2’s Eric Philips was at Ebenezer Baptist Church and said the Rev. Al Sharpton was among the speakers.

Some marchers chanted, “Legal lynching’s got to go” and sang spirituals.
