2nd Georgia Tech student dies from wreck

A second Georgia Tech student has died following a north Georgia wreck that killed one classmate and seriously injured another, the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday.

The three friends were traveling in a 2010 BMW on Ga. 136 in Pickens County when the vehicle left the roadway on a curve, struck an embankment and overturned around 4:30 a.m. Friday, Gordy Wright, GSP spokesman, told the AJC. All three were trapped in the vehicle, Wright said.

A passenger in the car, Naren Raghuraman, 21, died at the scene. The driver, Ratheesvar Mohan, 20, of Atlanta, and another passenger, Daniel Bernard Hickman, 21, of Atlanta, were flown to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment.

Hickman died Monday evening, Wright said. Mohan remained hospitalized Tuesday, but his condition was not immediately known.

All three were wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck, Wright said. Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Raghuraman, of Princeton, N.J., was studying international affairs, according to Matt Nagel, university spokesman. Hickman was studying Aerospace Engineering, Nagel said. His family lives in Saudia Arabia.

Mohan is also studying Aerospace Engineering, Nagel said. Mohan’s family lives in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to the university.

John Stein, dean of students, alerted the campus of the wreck Friday afternoon in a note that was also posted on the university’s Facebook page. Stein sent another note to students Tuesday morning with news of Hickman’s death.

“Our focus and thoughts are with the families who have been affected by this tragedy, as well as those of you who are their friends and colleagues,” Stein said. “On behalf of the entire Georgia Tech family, we extend our support and condolences to the families of these students.”

The investigation into the wreck continues, the state patrol said.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for Hickman at the Georgia Tech Catholic Center, followed by burial at the Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta. A 1 p.m. reception is planned at the Catholic Center.
