Clayton County Schools Taken Off Probation

The Clayton County school district has been taken off probation by a national standards agency.

The metro Atlanta-based Southern Association of Colleges and Schools announced Friday that the 50,000-student district is completely stable after a decade of turmoil. Clayton County schools lost accreditation for nine months starting in the fall of 2008.

Clayton County regained status with SACS in May 2009 but was put on probation for two years to address lingering issues.

Accreditation loss is a rare move by SACS and can mean the district can no longer receive some federal funding and graduates may not be eligible for admission to colleges.

SACS is also expected to give updates Friday for ongoing discussions with the Atlanta and Cobb County school districts.
