DeKalb reinstates 71 county jobs

DeKalb County leaders have reinstated scores of jobs that were erased from the county payroll.

On Tuesday, the board of commissioners voted to reinstate 71 vacant jobs with the Sheriff’s Department. They voted to defer a decision on reinstating positions at the DeKalb County Police Department.

The positions were eliminated in light of a $55 million shortfall in the county budget, in part due to property values dropping off three times lower than expected. But Sheriff Thomas Brown asked leaders to reconsider. After Tuesday’s meeting, he told Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge he is pleased with the outcome.

“We have the largest jail in the state of Georgia. We book in 40,000 people into the jail every year. The average daily population is 3,300 inmates,” he said.

Out of the 71 jobs, 35 will be detention officers.
