Search Suspended For Missing Swimmer

Search crews have suspended their search Sunday after spending all day trying to find a missing swimmer at Lake Lanier.

Friends reported the man missing Saturday night at the Buford Dam Park.

Dive crews went into the water three or four times Sunday, focusing on specific areas of the lake near the beach here. But so far, they have not found the man.

“We’ve done several dives. So far, our swift water team has done several searches on top of the water, snorkeling, trying to get a better area of where he might be,” Lt. Eric Eberly of Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services said.

Gwinnett fire swift water teams, along with Hall and Forsyth County divers, have been searching the water at Buford Dam Park.

On Saturday afternoon, cadaver dogs with Dawson County Emergency Services helped narrow the search area by pinpointing areas for divers to target.

“It’s extremely hard for the divers today because it’s such a broad area,” Eberly said.

Eberly said about 60 people were at the lake for a church baptism service and realized a man was missing from their group.

Emergency crews got the call around 8 p.m. and searched the water for about an hour-and-a-half before starting again Sunday morning.

Friends said they had last seen the man in the water just past the buoys, but no one could recall seeing him in a two hour period.

“They just stated that he did not know how to swim and he did not have any flotation device,” Eberly said.

Emergency officials said they would meet Monday morning to decide their next course of action.
