Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued as storms approach Georgia – Atlanta News … – MyFox Atlanta

ATLANTA –

Be on the lookout for rain and potential storms as you make your way home Monday night.  Parts of Georgia are at risk for severe weather, and both a Tornado Watch and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch have already been issued for parts of west and northwest Georgia.

The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch for dozens of Georgia counties, including those in metro Atlanta.  It’s in effect until 10 p.m., and includes the following counties: Bibb, Butts, Carroll, Chattahoochee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Crawford, Crisp, DeKalb, Dooly, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Haralson, Harris, Heard, Henry, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Monroe, Muscogee, Newton, Paulding, Peach, Pike, Polk, Rockdale, Schley, Spalding, Stewart, Sumpter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson, and Webster.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 p.m.  The watch area includes Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties.

The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms ahead of a front that is developing over the southern plains and lower Gulf coast have already moved into northwest Georgia, and storms are likely to intensify as the afternoon continues.  Some of those storms could contain damaging winds, large hail and the potential risk of an isolated tornado.

A second line of showers and storms will develop as the cold front moves in tonight, with the main area of concern shifting to central Georgia for the early overnight hours.  NWS says the watch area may be extended later as a result.
