Ga senators file legislation aimed at fixing water woes

WASHINGTON -- Georgia's senators just fired another salvo in the state's ongoing water wars with Alabama and Florida. Republican Sens. Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss on Thursday introduced legislation aimed at legalizing metro Atlanta's disputed withdrawals of drinking water from Lake Lanier. Senior U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson ruled in July 2009 that metro Atlanta has no rights to water from Lake Lanier and gave Georgia three years to work out a water-sharing agreement with Florida and Alabama. Police: Man stabs woman to death before stabbing himself

Police found a woman stabbed to death and a man with stab wounds at an Avondale Estates home Friday morning. The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his condition was not immediately available. Police believe the man stabbed the woman to death, then tried to kill himself. "It appears at this time to be domestic-related," Avondale Estates Police Sgt. Lynn Thomas said. Both were described as "60ish." 2,300 stimulus jobs may be lost

A federal stimulus program that provided 2,300 Georgians with jobs will expire today — unless Congress agrees to an extension. But state officials acknowledged that the program failed to meet its goals. The state had hoped to provide jobs for 5,000 people, and it used only half of the $21 million that it could have spent. The goals were ambitious, said Eli Phillips, state Department of Human Services stimulus programs director, and the program didn’t start as quickly as the state had hoped. Elderly Man Shoots Home Invader

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Police found an intruder an elderly man said he shot during a home invasion. The shooting happened at a home on Meadowbrooke Chase in DeKalb County just before 2 a.m. Thursday. Detectives said the robber checked himself into the emergency room. Officers said they found him there getting treated for a bullet wound to his leg. Police: Man Was Growing $34K Worth Of Pot In Closet

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- Officials with the Multi Agency Narcotics Squad and the Hall County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after they said they found him growing marijuana in a closet. Police said David Wilder Mossman, 35, of Gainesville, was arrested Tuesday without incident after they found 17 marijuana plants in the closet of his home on Riverside Terrace. Officials said they also found processed marijuana, smoking pipes and other marijuana-related paraphernalia. Authorities said the estimated street value of the drugs was $34,000. Police: Woman Placed Suspicious Device Under School Bus

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Pleasant Hill Road and Club Drive were shut down Wednesday morning after police said a woman placed a suspicious device under a school bus. Gwinnett County police said at about 8 a.m., a woman got out of her vehicle and placed an object under a school bus at the intersection of Club Drive and Pleasant Hill Road. Man, 72, Found Dead In Burning Truck

MENTONE, Ala. -- Officials have identified a man killed in a fiery truck accident in Mentone last week as a 72-year-old from Georgia. Mentone Assistant Police Chief Kirby Johnston says the man has been identified as Al Lee Smith of Dalton, Ga. Johnston says Smith suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Johnston says firefighters were called to an area just off Alabama 117 Wednesday night, to what appeared to be a brush fire. Former President Jimmy Carter Hospitalized

ATLANTA -- Former President Jimmy Carter has been hospitalized in Cleveland, after being taken there with an upset stomach. Carter, 85, was a passenger on a commercial flight to Cleveland on Tuesday morning and became ill. Jackie Mayo, a spokeswoman at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, says Carter was taken off the plane by rescue crews. Man Killed After Fall From Deer Hunting Stand

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Authorities say a 45-year-old Hall County man is dead after a 25-foot fall from a deer hunting standing. Hall County Sheriff's Office officials haven't released the man's name. They say he had gone about 200 yards behind his home to set up the stand for a future hunt. Col. Jeff Strickland says the man's brother went to look for him after he didn't return for a time. Man Cited After Picture Found On Phone

JONESBORO, Ga. -- Authorities say a photo-filled phone led them to a man later cited for driving his truck into a Clayton County home and then driving away. Clayton County Police Officer Otis Willis says authorities cited Barney Bernard Phelps with three counts of striking a fixed object, driving while his license was suspended and failure to maintain lane stemming from the Saturday incident.
